Nose Surgery with Dr. Langsdon

Before
After

One goal of nose surgery is solely aesthetic — to bring its shape and proportions into balance with the other facial features. Nose surgery can also change nasal structure to correct an injury or birth defect, or resolve breathing problems.

Regardless of your reasons for seeking rhinoplasty or septoplasty, you should only trust an expert to operate on the delicate nasal structures, creating a result that improves your facial harmony and quality of life while preserving or enhancing your respiratory ability.

Dr. Phillip Langsdon is a leading figure in the field of facial plastic surgery. He has developed improved techniques for rhinoplasty, including a preservation rhinoplasty technique that enhances the natural look when changing the tip of the nose. Dr. Langsdon served as president of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) in 2018-19. Many people consider him to be the best rhinoplasty surgeon in America.

The Ideal Rhinoplasty Candidate

Many people wonder if there is an ideal age to perform a nose job. To ensure that the results are as predictable and long-lasting as possible, it’s highly recommended that patients undergo a rhinoplasty only after their facial bones have completely matured. In most cases, girls’ facial structures stop developing at fifteen and boys at eighteen. Maturity is variable; therefore, the timing of rhinoplasty depends on each individual’s growth, maturation, and specific problem. It is essential that a parent accompany a young adult for their consultation visit.

If your facial bones have stopped growing and if you are in good health, it is never too late for nasal surgery. Sometimes a nose becomes progressively disfigured with age. A long nose with a drooping tip may result from aging, and a rhinoplasty surgery can provide a nose lift for a more youthful appearance. Those seeking rhinoplasty in Memphis often pair it with a facelift to give themselves comprehensive facial rejuvenation.

Rhinoplasty Types

Rhinoplasty is surgery to improve the nose’s appearance and bring facial proportions into better harmony. Rhinoplasty can also correct some breathing problems.

Rhinoplasty can decrease or increase the size of the nose, change the shape or position of the tip of the nose, narrow the width of the nostrils, or straighten a nose that is crooked or has a hump. When performing rhinoplasty or septoplasty surgery for a patient with trouble breathing, Dr. Langsdon opens a narrowed or obstructed nasal airway. The surgery involves the meticulous removal and reshaping of the nasal bones and cartilage.

Preservation rhinoplasty is an approach to nose-reshaping surgery that conserves as much of the original tissue in the nose as possible to create natural-looking changes. In preservation rhinoplasty, Dr. Langsdon alters the nose bridge by removing a small amount of bone and cartilage from below (rather than from the top, as in traditional or structural rhinoplasty).

This approach retains more of the nose’s original structure for more natural results. Preservation rhinoplasty also maintains the cartilage in the tip of the nose while making the desired shape changes, rather than altering the cartilage with grafts, sutures, or other modifications. It reduces the risk of changes in the shape of the nasal tip over time.

Revision rhinoplasty, also known as secondary nose surgery, aims to correct problems with the results of an earlier procedure. The goal of revision rhinoplasty is to fix disappointing cosmetic results from the initial rhinoplasty or to clear obstruction in the nasal airway and restore comfortable breathing function. Rhinoplasty is among the most complex and challenging of all plastic surgery procedures. When problems result from the initial procedure, it becomes even more critical to work with the most skilled and experienced facial plastic surgeon to make needed corrections.

Teenage rhinoplasty is not significantly different from rhinoplasty for adults. However, we must wait to perform the procedure if the facial bones and cartilage are still growing. Some girls are able to have surgery after they are having monthly cycles and have stopped growing in height. Boys usually physically mature at a later age than girls. We usually recommend waiting for boys until they have stopped growing in height.

What Our Patients Have to Say

Absolutely the best experience I’ve ever had at any doctor's office, my experience was 5 stars in every aspect. I set out to find a Surgeon who could correct a few significant problems with my nose. I searched Atlanta, Dallas, and Miami. During my search, I found Dr. Langsdon and to my surprise, he was located relatively close to my home, so I set up an appointment for a consultation to see if he could fix my issues. At my initial consultation, it took me less than 5 minutes to realize this was the person I wanted to perform surgery on me, immediately his confidence and knowledge were apparent. He answered my questions, was open and honest about what he could accomplish, and was sincerely interested in helping me achieve the corrections I was seeking.

Rhinoplasty FAQS

What’s the Difference Between the Open and Closed Rhinoplasty?

A “closed” rhinoplasty is when all the incisions are placed inside the nose. In an external rhinoplasty, the surgeon makes external incisions to access the nasal structures. Many surgeons prefer the closed method because it results in faster healing for the patient, and the incisions will be hidden. Dr. Langsdon’s rhinoplasty is performed using incisions placed inside the nose; however, he might make some incisions along the nostrils if they are too wide and need to be resized. These incisions are usually well-hidden by the natural creases of the nose.

Does Rhinoplasty Change My Face?

The Langsdon Clinic strives to create results that are proportional to the patient’s natural facial architecture. The results should bring the patient’s facial features into harmony while at the same time having an aesthetically pleasing effect. The Langsdon Clinic prides itself in creating results that don’t look unnatural or artificial.

What’s Unique About the Rhinoplasty Performed by The Langsdon Clinic?

With our rhinoplasty technique, an incision is made into the nasal bones when repositioning is required. There is also usually less post-operative discomfort, discoloration, and swelling when compared with older techniques. We don’t use nasal packing, which we’ve found dramatically improves patients’ comfort during recovery.

Along with our advanced techniques, The Langsdon Clinic also offers patients an outstanding patient experience; our highly professional staff will guide our patients every step of the way and inform them of every aspect of their rhinoplasty. We personalize each rhinoplasty procedure to fit each patient. We also take the time to create a post-operative recovery plan to help each patient heal successfully from the procedure.

What's the Best Age for Rhinoplasty?

There’s no “best” age for rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty can be performed on teenagers once their facial bones and cartilage have stopped growing, which coincides with when they stop growing in height. That’s typically at about age 15 for girls and 18 for boys. After that, rhinoplasty can be performed with excellent cosmetic results on adults of any age. Cosmetic changes to the nose can be beneficial in old age when the nose develops in a form that is out of harmony with other facial features, growing longer or with a downward-hooked end, for example.
